The Major Attractions
Botanical Beach Provincial Park
Once the University of Minnesota's marine station in 1900, students and researchers come from all over the world to study marine life here. The best time to see the tidal pools is at low tide when all the sea life is trapped for your observation. Strange geophysical shapes are carved into the area coastline, and the beach also gives way to alternate marine trails in
the vicinity. Lots of info and photos here.
Red Creek Fir (349 square metres of wood)
It has been calculated by Robert Van Pelt (Director of the Washington State Big Tree Program), and "a laser-gun-wielding scientist who is turning the arcane world of tree-hunting upside-down",
according to a Vancouver Sun article Oct 20/01 by Charles Montgomery, that the largest known Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in the world is the Red Creek fir. This tree is the largest known
individual in the family Pinaceae.
