West Coast Trail Advisory - Parks Canada

July 29 - August 7, 2005


Cougars: Km 62-66: Cougar on trail, to Owen Pt.
Km 34: Cougar on trail

Bears: Keep a Bare Campsite to keep bears and people safe. Bear-proof lockers are in place at many campsites hang your food and garbage properly in all other areas.

Km 28 - 30: Large food habituated bear in Cheewhat area. Area is closed to camping until further notice.
Km 12- Bear on north end of Michigan beach

Wolves: Keep a clean campsite so wolves do not scavenge food. Report all sightings immediately.
Km 12-48: Wolves seen from Pachena Lighthouse to Bonilla Pt.
Km 70-75: Wolf and tracks seen along the trail.
KM 44: Habituated wolf, no aggressive display but hard to deter.

Respect all Wildlife! Report any encounters to park staff. Be cautious of all wild animals, as they can be very dangerous. If you see a cub or kitten that appears to be alone, remember that its mother is never far away. Never approach wildlife - leave the area immediately!

Closed Areas:
It is prohibited by the National Parks Act of Canada to enter closed areas.


Km 36-38: Area closed to camping due to habituated bear.
Between Km 43 - 44: Portion of trail closed due to mud slide. Use the beach route.
