Drive with your headlights on and at a minimal speed, as gravel has less traction than pavement. Active logging is usually between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Pull over and stop for logging trucks as their loads are very wide.
You are in cougar, bear, elk and wolf country. Hike in broups, make plenty of noise and if you see one of these animals, keep eye contact and back out of sight slowly, making sure not to trip, then leave the area promptly. Never run, as this may trigger a response. Educate yourself about safety by calling your local BC Environment Office.
Frequent storms hit the coast during the fall and into spring. Never go out during high winds and flood periods. Freshets can happen suddenly and as most trails are located in water runoff areas you can easily come into trouble. High winds cause trees and branches to blow down which put the hiker at too much risk.
Study maps, bring a compass, locate roads, creeks, rivers and other landmarks. This will give you a bearing and keep you from getting lost.
Wear protective clothing; bright colours are better during hunting seasons. Always wear proper footwear; On the Falls Creek Trail and the First and Second Creek Trail it is best to wear gumboots.
